The ICMP Summer Collaboration
(United Kingdom)

This ten-day intensive in London takes place at the Institute of Contemporary Music
Performance and is led by Richard Smith, a visiting Professor from the University of
Southern California, Los Angeles. There are projects and activities for a wide range of
students – particularly popular music instrumental and vocal performance, education,
recording, production, culture and music industry – as well as for classically trained
students who want to learn about and perform popular styles, band leading and
“classical crossover” music. The course can count as an elective at both the
undergraduate and graduate levels. We have had undergraduate, masters and doctoral
students participate over the years that this collaboration has been running.

2200-2230 hours
USC Thornton Popular Music Ensemble
(United States)

This performance will feature three artist/songwriters and rhythm section from the
Popular Music Program at the USC Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles,
California. The program is in its sixth year and has been hailed by Rolling Stone
magazine as “the cutting-edge department that’s become the site of Los Angeles’ most
productive new music scene”. During their junior and senior years, students in the
program are active writing, arranging, performing, producing and recording original
music. This ensemble, which will perform original music in a variety of popular music
styles, highlights the creative and collaborative nature of the student’s experience at
Thornton.
